Finally, from a distance, he hears it. His face lights up with joy as he runs toward the source, joining a group of children to find the cotton candy seller!
This heartwarming story highlights key themes such as sound recognition, curiosity, and exploration, as well as the emotional connections children can form with familiar sounds. It also touches on secondary themes like city life, the bond between father and child, and the value of patience and anticipation.
Told with a gentle, repetitive style that encourages interaction and prediction, the story helps reinforce vocabulary and concepts. About the Author
Dima Masri has loved stories since childhood. She is now a writer, translator, and researcher working in the fields of education and children’s literature. She studied translation and later earned a master’s degree in education from Harvard University. Dima lives in Amman, where she enjoys exploring the city and writing. Omar and the Sounds of the City is her first children’s book. Her work has also been published in Sukoon magazine, ArabLit Quarterly, and the poetry anthology Ask the Night for a Dream.
About the Illustrator
Sasha Haddad is a Lebanese illustrator who has been working professionally since she graduated from the Cambridge School of Arts in 2014. She is the illustrator of more than fifteen children’s books. She created logos for various brands and restaurants in Lebanon and the Arab region. She had her first solo exhibition in October 2019.
قصة مصوّرة تنمّي مهارات الإدراك السمعي والانتباه للتفاصيل من خلال رحلة ممتعة يخوضها عمر برفقة والده صباح يوم العطلة. وبينما يسير عمر في شوارع المدينة المزدحمة لشراء الخضار والفاكهة، يصغي إلى أصوات مختلفة حوله: زقزقة العصافير، أبواق السيارات، نداءات الباعة، ومواء القطط، لكنه يظل بانتظار صوتٍ واحدٍ مميز، صوت يحبه أكثر من كل الأصوات. وفي النهاية يسمع عمر صوتا من بعيد فيبتسم بسعادة ويلحق بمجموعة من الأطفال نحو مصدر الصوت، أخيرًا يجد بائع غزل البنات، الذي كان ينتظره طوال الرحلة.
تسلط القصة الضوء على مواضيع رئيسة كتمييز الأصوات والفضول والاستكشاف، والعلاقة العاطفية التي قد تربط الطفل ببعض الأصوات المحببة، كما تتناول موضوعات ثانوية مثل التعرّف على مظاهر الحياة اليومية في المدينة، وتقديم صورة دافئة عن العلاقة بين الأب والابن، إضافة إلى تعزيز قيمة الصبر وانتظار اللحظات الجميلة.
وُ تُبنى القصة على أسلوب تكراري بسيط يشجع الطفل على التفاعل وتوقع الأحداث، مما يزيد من متعة القراءة ويثبّت المفردات والمفاهيم. ويمكن بعد قراءة القصة تنفيذ مجموعة من الأنشطة التفاعلية، مثل مناقشة الأصوات المألوفة في بيئة الطفل، أو تقليد الأصوات، أو رسم خريطة صوتية للحي، ما يعزز المشاركة والتعبير الشخصي ويجعل تجربة القراءة أكثر ارتباطًا بحياة الطفل اليومية.

1. التمييز السمعي والانتباه للأصوات: القصة تركز على مهارة الانتباه والتعرّف إلى الأصوات المختلفة في البيئة المحيطة.

عن الكاتب/ة
ديمة مصري تعشق القصص منذ طفولتها وهي الآن كاتبة ومترجمة وباحثة تعمل في مجال التعليم وأدب الأطفال. درست الترجمة ومن ثم حصلت على درجة الماجستير بالتعليم من جامعة هارفارد. تسكن ديمة في عمّان حيث تحب أن تقضي وقتها باستكشاف المدينة والكتابة. قصة "عمر وأصوات المدينة" أولى كتبها للأطفال كما نشرت أعمالها في مجلة Sukoon و ArabLitQuarterly و المجموعة الشعرية Ask the Night for a Dream.
عن الرسام/ة
ساشا حداد رسامة لبنانية تعمل باحتراف منذ تخرجها من مدرسة كامبردج للفنون عام 2014. رسمت ساشا أكثر من خمسة عشر كتابًا للأطفال، كما صممت أغلفة بعض المجلات والشعارات لبعض العلامات التجارية في لبنان والمنطقة العربية. أقامت معرضها الفردي الأول في 2019.
