Mountain Giant - عملاق الجبل

Through this story, children learn the concept of a covenant (or promise) and the importance of keeping it, as well as the significance of tolerance and understanding. They also learn how prejudice can lead to injustice and misunderstanding. The story further promotes the values of cooperation and assistance, illustrating how teamwork can solve problems and achieve good for all.

In the story, the Giant lives in a small hut on the mountaintop. Every year during the sheep-shearing season, the Giant shears the wool from the sheep to make a coat that protects him from the winter cold, which upsets the villagers. After a meeting and discussion between the leader and the villagers, the leader decides to shear the wool this year before the Giant can beat them to it.

When winter arrives, the Giant descends to the sheep pastures as usual and is shocked to find the sheep bare. He is extremely saddened because he won't be able to make a coat this year. One cold, rainy night, he feels a huge rock tremble and finds it on the verge of rolling down towards the village. He holds it steady with his hands all night in the cold and rain. However, a small rock still rolls down towards the village and destroys the local mill. The villagers then assume the Giant is responsible and decide to confront him and drive him away. When they climb to the mountaintop, they are met with a shocking surprise: the Giant is holding a massive rock that was about to fall onto the village houses.

At this moment, everything changes. The villagers realize their misunderstanding and their hasty judgment of the Giant. Inside the Giant's house, the Giant tells them the secret of the old covenant between his ancestors and the villagers, which stipulated that the Giant would take the wool from the sheep every year in exchange for protecting the village from falling rocks. The villagers then feel deep remorse, apologize to the Giant, and promise to make him a new coat and give him a sufficient share of the wool every year. The story ends with a scene uniting the Giant and the villagers at the top of the mountain.

About the Author

Khadidja Belarossi is an Algerian writer specializing in children’s literature. She studied psychology and then creative writing. She serves as the editor of Reihana Publishing House’s page for reviews and recommendations in children’s literature. She has published several stories for children, including Tea Party with the Dragon, Fayrouziya Doesn’t Care, The Gingerbread King (Asala Publishing, Lebanon), Winter of the Green Dragon (Zahra Publishing, UAE), Mr. Sandian’s Alarm Clock (Hazaya Publishing, Kuwait), Lanterns (Riwaya Publishing, Saudi Arabia), and others.

Her works aim to foster imagination and creativity in children while emphasizing human values and cultural diversity. Her project Reihana Tales received the Creative and Critical Writing Horizons Grant for 2024. She is currently working on new projects intended to enrich the Arab children’s literature library with engaging and impactful content, with a special focus on stories that reflect our cultural identity in a contemporary spirit.

About the Illustrator

Sara Nikforouz is an Iranian illustrator and
graphic designer, with a degree in Graphic Design from Shariati University in Tehran. Since childhood, she has been drawn to pens and colors, knowing from an early age that her path would lead to creating art and bringing images to life.

For over 9 years, Sara has collaborated with various publishers worldwide, including in the United States, Turkey, and Oman. She specializes in children’s book illustration — a world she describes as filled with color, joy, and kindness.

She is passionate about life and finds endless delight in simple beauties, like the blue sky and the golden sunlight. This love of life and her gentle spirit shine through in every line and color she creates.

من خلال هذه القصة، يتعلم الأطفال مفهوم العهد والوفاء به وأهمية التسامح والتفاهم، وكيف أن الأحكام المسبقة قد تؤدي إلى الظلم وسوء الفهم. كما تعزز القصة قيمة التعاون والمساعدة، إذ يظهر كيف يمكن للعمل الجماعي أن يحل المشكلات ويحقق الخير للجميع.
في القصة يعيش العملاق في كوخ صغير على قمة الجبل، وكل عام في موسم جز الصوف، يجز العملاق الصوف عن الخراف ليصنع منه معطفا يقيه برد الشتاء، مما يثير استياء أهل القرية. وبعد اجتماع ونقاش بين الزعيم وأهل القرية يقرر الزعيم أن يجزوا الصوف هذا العام قبل أن يسبقهم العملاق لفعل ذلك.
عندما يحلّ الشتاء، ينزل العملاق كعادته إلى مراعي الأغنام ويُفاجأ بأن الخرفان عارية فيحزن حزنا شديدا لأنه لن يستطيع صنع معطف هذه السنة. وفي إحدى الليالي الباردة والماطرة يشعر باهتزاز صخرة ضخمة ويجد أنها على وشك التدحرج نحو القرية، فيثبتها بيديه طوال الليل تحت البرد والمطر إلّا أنّ صخرة صغيرة تتدحرج نحو القرية وتحطم الطاحونة الموجودة فيها، حينها يظن أهل القرية أن العملاق هو من فعل ذلك فيقررون مواجهته وطرده، وعندما يصعدون إلى قمة الجبل تكون المفاجأة الصادمة فالعملاق يمسك بصخرة ضخمة جدا كادت أن تقع على بيوت القرية.
وفي هذه اللحظة يتغير كل شيء، يدرك أهل القرية سوء فهمهم وتسرعهم بالحكم على العملاق، وفي بيت العملاق يخبرهم العملاق عن سر العهد القديم بين أجداده وأهل القرى الذي ينص على أن يأخذ العملاق الصوف عن الخراف كل عام مقابل حمايته للقرية من سقوط الصخور عليها، حينها يشعر أهل القرية بالندم الشديد ويعتذرون من العملاق ويعدونه بصنع معطف جديد له وإعطائه حصة كافية من الصوف كل عام. تنتهي القصة بمشهد يجمع العملاق بأهل القرية في أعلى الجبل.

سارة نيكفروز رسامة ومصممة جرافيك إيرانية، حاصلة على شهادة في التصميم الجرافيكي من جامعة شريعتي في طهران. منذ الطفولة، كانت منجذبة للأقلام والألوان، وعرفت منذ صغرها أن طريقها سيقودها نحو خلق الفن وإحياء الصور.
على مدار أكثر من تسع سنوات، تعاونت سارة مع ناشرين مختلفين حول العالم، بما في ذلك الولايات المتحدة وتركيا وعمان. تتخصص في رسم كتب الأطفال حيث تصفه عالمًا مليئًا بالألوان والفرح واللطف.
