Against The Tide - ست الكل

Sometimes we face difficult and painful situations in life, which might make us feel hopeless and bring us down. 15 year-old Yusra however, was able to overcome the feeling of helplessness and think of a way that would get her and her family out of the rut they’re in.

After the tragic death of her elder brother, and an unfortunate accident that renders her fisherman father paralyzed and in a wheelchair, Yusra decides to take over her father’s fishing boat and therefore become the first and only fisherwoman in Gaza. The conservative society in Gaza is shocked and condemning, but with the support of her family, Yusra perseveres and ventures out to sea where she faces the same challenges as other fishermen in Gaza. She is restricted to fish in a 3 nautical mile zone which over time has become very hard to find enough fish in. The Israeli war ships are always looming menacingly in the horizon ready to pounce on any fisherman who crosses the 3 nautical mile zone. After a run in with the Israeli Navy ships the international media gets hold of her story and asks for an interview with her. Later, more opportunities open up for her when she becomes a member of a cultural centre and has access to the internet. Suddenly life becomes full of possibilities.

Reflecting back on the choice that she has made to become a fisher woman, Yusra realizes that you can be whoever you set your mind to be and that even if she is living in Gaza, “one of the biggest prisons in the world “she still has control and can change her fate.

This story is recommended as a supplementary reader in schools as it addresses a number of topics of interest to teenagers; overcoming hardship, taking responsibility of your life, courage, friendship and what it means to be a teenager in a war torn place like Gaza, where people have been under total blockade for years now.

This story was inspired by the true story of a young Gazan girl called Madelein Callab who became Gaza’s first fisher woman at the age of 14. Madelein's website: https://madleenfishing.win/

Other than that all the characters and plot are fictional. All persons mentioned in the story and unfolding details in the story are fictional.

About the Author

Taghreed Najjar, was awarded the 2021 Jordanian State Award for children Literature. She has been a several time nominee for the Astrid Lindgren award and a several-time winner and short listee of the Etisalat Prize for Arabic Children’s Literature. Her YA novel Whose Doll is This? Won the YA book of the year (2019)

With a portfolio spanning 4 decades, Taghreed – a multifaceted author - writes picture books, middle grade and young adult books. Her picture books have become classics that are read and enjoyed by generations. While her YA novels have found great success in addressing difficult subjects reflecting political and cultural realities in the region.
Several of Najjar’s books have been recommended by “White Ravens” and several have been translated to languages including English, Italian, Swedish, Danish, French and Turkish.

About the Illustrator

Born in Damascus in 1977, a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University in 1998. Gulnar started working as a writer and illustrator of children's books in 2004 and has published more than twenty books since then. Her title “My Ego and I” won the Al Sharjah best children book award for children aged 6-8, and in 2009 her book “When I am Mad, When I am Sad” won her the Anna Lindh Foundation award in Damascus. She continues to  participate in workshops for illustration in different parts of the world.

في بعض الأحيان نواجه في حياتنا بعض المصاعب والمواقف المؤلمة التي تجعلنا نشعر بالاحباط واليأس.
في قصة ""ست الكل"" استطاعت يسرى ذات الخمسة عشر عاما أن تتخطى شعورها باليأس والعجز وتفكر بطريقة تخرجها وعائلتها من المحنة التي يمرون بها.

بعد الوفاة المأساوية لأخيها الأكبر وبعد تعرض والدها الصياد لحادث مؤلم يجعله مقعدًا في كرسي متحرك، تقرر يسرى استلام قارب صيد والدها وبذلك تصبح الصيادة الأولى والوحيدة في غزة.
يصدم المجتمع المحافظ في غزة بما تفعله يسرى وينتقدها بشدة، ولكن وقوف عائلتها بجانبها يزيدها إصرارًا على الخروج إلى البحر حيث تواجه نفس الصعوبات والتحديات التي يواجهها صيادي غزة.
تقتصر المسافة المسموح لأهل غزة الصيد فيها على ثلاثة أميال بحرية فقط، ومع مرور الزمن تصبح هذه المنطقة شبه خالية من الأسماك كما أن السفن الحربية الإسرائيلية تظل على استعداد دائم للانقضاض على أي قارب صيد يتعدى هذه المسافة.
بعد حدوث مواجهة بين يسرى والبحرية الإسرائيلية تطلب إحدى وسائل الإعلام مقابلتها وعقد لقاء صحفي معها حيث يسلط الضوء عليها كأول صيادة في غزة وعلى أحداث غزة من حصار ومن هجوم على أسطول الحرية.. بعد فترة من الزمن وبسبب حظر الصيد على أهل غزة من قبل البحرية الإسرائيلية تملأ يسرى فراغها وتصبح عضوة في مركز ثقافي في غزة وتتمكن من استخدام الإنترنت وتصبح الكثير من الخيارات متاحة أمامها.
ومن خلال تجربة يسرى كصيادة، تدرك في قرارة نفسها أنها تستطيع أن تكون ما تريد ، وأنها تستطيع أن تدير حياتها وتغير مصيرها حتى لو كانت تعيش في غزة ""أكبر سجن في العالم"".

ينصح بهذه القصة كقراءة تكميلية أو مساعدة في المدارس لأنها تعالج عددًا من المواضيع التي تهم المراهقين.
إنها قصة عن التغلب على المصاعب وعن الشجاعة وحول ما يعنيه أن يعيش الإنسان في منطقة حرب.
تتناول القصة موضوع الصداقة وما يشعر به المراهق الذي يعيش في مكان مثل غزة حيث يقبع الناس تحت حصار خانق منذ سنوات.
استلهمت القصة من قصة حقيقية لفتاة غزاوية يافعة ""مادلين قلاب"" والتي تصبح صيادة غزة الأولى في عمر الرابعة عشر.
بخلاف ذلك فإن جميع الشخصيات في حبكة القصة من وحي الخيال. وجميع الأشخاص المذكورين في القصة وفي تفاصيلها من وحي الخيال.

عن الكاتب/ة

تغريد النجار من رواد أدب الأطفال الحديث في الاردن. فازت بجائزة الدولة التقديرية عن أدب الأطفال في حقل الآداب مجال أدب الأطفال لعام 2021. ترشحت لجائزة أستريد لندجرن العالمية المرموقة لعدة دورات.
تكتب تغريد النجار للأطفال منذ أكثر من40 عاما وتتوجه في كتاباتها للأعمار من 3+ وحتى 18+. قصصها المصورة تعتبر من الكتب الكلاسيكية التي تتداول من جيل لآخر أما رواياتها لليافعين فقد لاقت نجاحًا كبيرًا، واحتفى بها قرّاؤها على نطاق واسع، كما تم اعتمادها في المدارس كجزء من مناهجها الدراسية.
وصلت العديد من كتبها للقوائم القصيرة لجائزة اتصالات والشيخ زايد وحصلت على جوائز اقليمية كان آخرها جائزة اتصالات عن كتاب العام لليافعين 2019 عن روايتها ""لمن هذه الدمية؟""
كما تم اختيار بعض كتبها من قبل قائمة ""وايت ريفن"" العالمية لأفضل الكتب.
ترجمت العديد من كتبها إلى لغات مختلفة منها الانكليزية والفرنسية والإيطالية، والسويدية والدنماركية، والتركية، واليونانية وغيرها.

عن الرسام/ة

مواليد دمشق1977خريجة كلية الفنون الجميلة جامعة دمشق قسم التصوير الزيتي عام 1998، تفرغت غلنار للعمل في مجال رسوم وأدب الأطفال منذ عام 2004 وأصدرت ما يزيد عن عشرين كتاباً للأطفال رسوماً ونصاً. حازت على جائزة الشارقة 2013 عن كتابها( أنا والأنا حمل ثقيل ) كأفضل كتاب للأطفال عن الفئة العمرية 6-8 سنوات. حازت على جائزة مؤسسة أناليند في دمشق 2009 عن قصتها (عندما أغضب – عندما أحزن) أفضل نص. شاركت في مجموعة من ورشات العمل للرسم مع رسامين من العالم.
